What to do with a rambunctious group of 30 Sixth Graders on a cold January afternoon? Because they are about to dive into their studies of French language and culture, the answer, of course, is PLAY PETANQUE! That is just what happened last Thursday when this year’s group of young players from University Preparatory School visited the Edmonds courts. This was very much a case of “learning by doing” as students jumped into their matches. Petanque coaches, Keogh, Michelle, Cris, Monte, Larry, and Tom instructed the rules of play and gave helpful tips as the students took up the game.

After brief instruction from their coaches, the kids immediately went to work.

Coach Michelle declares who has the point.

In typical fashion Coach Cris made no concessions to the weather but was full of good advice.

Is there a future petanque champion in this photo? Time will tell!
French teacher Amy Pasterczyk has woven petanque into her lessons for the last three years and counts her students’ time on the petanque courts as an important ingredient to their introduction to French culture. Edmonds Petanque looks forward to many more years of visits from UPrep and made it clear that all students and their extended families are welcome to come back for more boules at any time, preferably in somewhat warmer weather.
